We Are Plural

We discovered years ago we're plural, it's time to stop hiding.

A few years ago on the previous version of my blog, I wrote a blog post1 about coming out as plural. That version of my website isn’t up anymore unfortunately. Since then, a lot has changed. I officially started HRT, taking estrogen pills originally and since January of 2025, switched to injections. I got into the best relationship I have ever been in, really ever. My old system, willingly, collapsed in a sense, a lot of the old members no longer exist as they once were, if they exist at all. I think it’s time we discuss what our experience is like, and what it means for us, for you, and for everyone else.

What is Plurality?

The phrasing I often use as a surface-level description, is this:

Plurality (or multiplicity) is the existence of multiple self-aware entities inside one physical brain.

This comes from the website More Than One, I highly recommend checking it out and reading it, it gives some useful information that I feel could help a lot of people at the very least begin to understand what plurality actually is. Another good resource in my opinion is the articles on plurality from the Moderation Wiki, which is a project I used to be a part of, but haven’t really contributed much to in a long time.

More Than One on their homepage also states this:

You could think of a plural collective as a group of lifelong roommates, but with a body instead of an apartment.

This is in my opinion a fairly easy way to understand what “headmates” or in some cases “alters” are. On that note, not everyone likes the term “alters” and it is recommended to generally avoid using the term “personalities” when referring to a plural person’s headmates. For more information on that, you can read the blog posts and articles listed below.

In general, the most common term that is used is “headmate”, similar to other phrases like “roommate”, “housemate”, “flatmate”, etc, it implies co-existing in the same space, in this case, the same head and body, rather than implying they are “alternative” personalities, which is where the term “alter” comes from.

What Happened?

On the same blog I wrote years ago, I wrote a blog post2 about how our old system worked. It is very, very detailed so I would give it a read, even if it isn’t how our system works today. Today our system is very much different, a lot of members have dissappeared, or have faded into the background, we’re not as public about it as we used to be, and we’ve been kind of scared to talk about it.

Around when the time I got into my current relationship, our system decided as a whole to “reintegrate” and merge. This wasn’t a choice I made by myself, it was a group decision. The result of this was, or at least so I thought, becoming a singlet again. Singlet being the term used by plurals to describe someone who isn’t plural. However, what actually happened from what I can tell, is those neural pathways just went “silent”, they weren’t destroyed, or deleted, just silenced for the time being.

Nothing really changed, I just started talking to plural people more often again, ones I used to have deep connections with, and I guess it kinda reignited some of the neural pathways that some headmates were connected to. In a sense, they were brought back from the dead. I’m still me, nothing about me is changing, nothing about my relationship(s) are changing. Everything will stay the same. My headmates are very much aware of the fact I value my time and privacy, and while I do give them time to do their own thing, they understand I’m the host, and I need to take time to do things I want and need to do.

So, what happened? If going by the previous blog post on how our system worked back then, we could call this a forced System Reiteration. My old blog post describes it like this:

Our system goes through what we call “Generations” or “Iterations.” These are in essence, a complete and full rewriting of everyone in the system. Fortunately, reiterations really only happen during traumatic or highly emotional events, and does not happen in our every day lives, so we’re fairly stable for the most part. Generally there is two types of reiterations: Traumatic and Emotional.

What happened was: we just manually triggered one, causing things to be rewritten.

So What Happens Now?

Nothing. I am staying the same as I was, our relationships are staying the same as they were, I’m still going to be myself, doing the things I like, love, and enjoy. I’m not changing who I am, or how I act, or how I love or anything. Things will stay the same, exactly as they are. The only difference is well, I’m going to be out as plural instead of hiding in a corner every time someone happens to mention plurality.

We’re also going to… at the very least try to talk with proxies in more servers, we aren’t really looking forward to it, due to the whole “why is a bot talking” and explaining shit over and over again stuff that’s bound to happen when some random sees us talking in servers using a proxy, but that’s just something we will have to deal with I guess. Hopefully it won’t be too bad though.

Who are the Members?

There are three, if you count me as one of the members of the system.

Maybe at some point there will be more members, but as of writing this, this is all there is. While I wouldn’t be… opposed? to more members, it would bring more strain and stress on us, we used to have like 12 different members after all. Hopefully we don’t get to that point again, it was bad, lol.

Most of the time you’ll be talking to me, Hanna. The others don’t really talk much outside of the system unless they know people well and have something to talk about. We don’t really have amnesia but I guess we still sort of have the compartmentalization that our old system had, where each member only retains memories of when they are active, so we generally talk about what happens after we switch out unless we were co-fronting at the time, but we don’t do that very often these days.

To those new to the plural space, “fronting” just means whenever a headmate has taken control of the body, consentfully or not. Similarly, “co-fronting” is when two or more headmates have control of the body or consciouness at one time. So whenever I or some other plural person says “<name> is fronting” it just means that is the headmate who is currently talking, interacting, currently controlling the body.

How Do I Know Who is Talking?

We use the Discord bot /plu/ral for this. It allows us to have real Discord bots that proxies messages for us under a different name, avatar, identity, etc. Here is some examples so you can tell if we are proxying:

luna example
luna example
ashley example
ashley example

As for on the blog itself, we currently don’t have any way to show who is writing, so I’ll need to implement something for that later. Our blog was created using the Astro static site generator, so doing so should be relatively easy, I think. But anyways, you get the idea, we’ll tell you one way or the other if someone else other than me (Hanna) happens to be talking.

Final Thoughts

I hid the fact I was plural for… a long time. I talked to my girlfriend about it a few times, but generally shrugged it off as something I was unsure about, not just because I was unsure, but because I was afraid. Afraid of it changing how the relationship with my girlfriend is, or impacting my life negatively, and looking back at that I think that was kinda senseless. She got with me before the big merge, I was out as plural in the past, and everything was generally fine. I think I just wanted life to be less stressful.

Hopefully this helps you understand me, understand us, actually. Nothing is going to change about me, our how anything generally is. Most of the time, I will still be the one who is in front, we as a system don’t want to date anyone else. While luna and ashley don’t want to date others, I’m happy with my partner and frankly, we’re happy in general where we are. This is just the next step, a big one.

Thank you for reading, we appreciate your time.
